Methodology

Source is the Corporate Citizen Database, which is assembled for the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada ranking. Data is drawn from fiscal 2011 for all Canadian mining and metals companies in the database.

All companies are attributed an overall score based on scores obtained on a set of twelve indicators. The overall score is a simple average of the scores for each of the twelve individual indicators. The indicators used are as follows:

Energy productivity: The ratio consists of total revenue in USD for a particular fiscal period divided by total direct and indirect energy (GRI: EN and EN4) consumed in GJ for the same period. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the energy productivity ratio against industry group peers. The improvement factor of 25% is awarded if energy productivity has increased by at least 12.5% over two years. The composite score=75% * the group percentile score + the improvement factor score (0% or 25%).

GHG productivity: The ratio consists of total revenue in USD for a particular fiscal period divided by total greeenhouse gases (GHG) emitted in tonnes for the same period. The GHG total (GRI: EN 16) includes scopes 1 and 2 only except for financial services companies which also includes scope 3. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the GHG productivity ratio against industry group peers. The improvement factor of 25% is awarded if carbon productivity has increased by at least 12.5% over two years. The composite score=75% * the group percentile score + the improvement factor score (0% or 25%).

Water productivity: The ratio consists of total revenue in USD for a particular fiscal period divided by total water withdrawn (GRI: EN8) in cubic metres for the same period. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the water productivity ratio against industry group peers. The improvement factor of 25% is awarded if water productivity has increased by at least 12.5% over two years. The composite score=75% * the group percentile score + the improvement factor score (0% or 25%).

Waste productivity: The ratio consists of total revenue in USD for a particular fiscal period divided by total waste generated (GRI: EN22) in tonnes for the same period. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the waste productivity ratio against industry group peers. The improvement factor of 25% is awarded if waste productivity has increased by at least 12.5% over two years. The composite score=75% * the group percentile score + the improvement factor score (0% or 25%).

Percent taxes paid: The tax score is the percentage of taxes paid in cash (four year everage) to statutory tax amount (four year average). Companies score a 0% in the event that their statutory tax amount (four year average) or taxes paid in cash (four year average) is zero or lower

Board diversity: The board diversity score is the percentage of women on the board of directors multiplied by two up to a maximum of 100%.

Paylink: Paylink attributes a score of 100% if the company specifies the proportion of a particular named executive's compensation that is linked to the achievement of certain clean-capitalism performance targets. Where the company has only mentioned the existence of a link between executive compensation and the achievement of certain clean-capitalism performance targets without specifying the proportion that so linked, the score given is 50%. A company where no such link exists receives a score of 0%

Pay equity: This is the ratio of the highest executive compensation for a particular year divided by the average employee compensation (which is equal to total employee compensation and benefits divided by total number of employees). The pay equity score is obtained by percentile ranking the ratio against every other company irrespective of industry group. The higher the ratio, the lower the pay equity score

Safety productivity: The ratio consists of total revenue in USD for a particular fiscal period divided by the total number of fatalities times USD1,000,000 plus number of lost-time injuries times USD1,000 for the same period. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the safety productivity ratio against industry group peers. The improvement factor of 25% is awarded if safety productivity has increased by at least 12.5% over two years. The composite score=75% * the group percentile score + the improvement factor score (0% or 25%). The total number of lost-time injuries is obtained using the following assumptions:
i) # Of work hours per week = 40
ii) # Of work weeks per year = 50

Employee turnover: The employee turnover score is obtained by percentile ranking the retention rate (1 - employee turnover rate) against all companies irrespective of industry group

Innovation Capacity: This is the ratio of 3-year average R&D expenditures to 3-year average sales. The group percentile scores are obtained by percentile ranking the R&D ratio ratio against industry group peers

Pension Funded Status: This is the percentage of the company's fair value of plan assets in the defined benefit pension plan to the projected benefit obligation at the end of the year. The maximum percentage score is 100%
