Supercharged by the influx of petroleum revenues, royalties and associated taxes, the future seemed limitless. Then we hit a state of crisis. A lack of pipeline capacity shut in much of Alberta’s oil, and the provincial government rationed production. Meanwhile, time was running out for the resource. Enthusiasts for an alternative energy were mostly shunned by incumbent oil producers. Fortunately, some far-sighted leaders acted to invest in breakthrough technologies that transformed the “alternative energy resource” into an economic juggernaut that would attract $313 billion in investments, employ 400,000 people directly and indirectly, and provide $8 billion in annual revenue to provincial and federal governments.
